The Church is neither an abstraction nor a generality. It exists only as a particular body. The different ways of living the one mystery of the Church are not a concession to antiquity, or mere stubbornness! This diversity is an essential, ontological component of catholicity. Far from being opposed to unity, and in particular to the indispensable Petrine ministry, it constitutes its very basis and substance.
