The descriptions of ascent and descent adduced from the works of Philo, Plotin, Stephen bar Sudaile, Isaac of Niniveh and Bar Hebraeus have in view the highest possibility of the human mind, as they are experienced by the philosopher and the mystic. There cannot be the slightest doubt that the mi‘raj described by Ghazali has a close affinity … and that it applies to the mystic highest experiences.
