The Wisdom of Animals (in Ibn Arabi)

William Chittick

In this talk, Prof. Chittick recounts and elucidates a section of Chapter 198 of al-Futuhat al-makkiyya, dwelling especially on the symbolism of particular letters of the Arabic alphabet, and on the meanings of the Divine Name al-Mudhill, “the Abaser.”

…in Ibn Arabi’s way of looking at the universe, all things are living words articulated in the breath of the All-Merciful. This is to say that the divine Life and the divine Mercy are in fact the same thing… “life is the sphere of Mercy that embraces everything.”
