In both traditions compassion is inseparable from love, mahabba in Islam and metta in Buddhism. In Buddhism one even finds the compound maitri-karuna ‘love-compassion’ which expresses the intertwining of these two principles; in Islam, likewise, Rahma cannot be adequately translated by the single English word ‘compassion’ or ‘mercy’, but requires the addition of the element of love.
