The great need of Western Man at the present day is for a recovery of the tradition and the widespread practice of prayer. My mind’s ear is always ringing with the Roman poet’s criticism of those who, for the sake of living, surrender all that makes life worth while. Ringing, too, with the reiterated question of St Ignatius of Loyola to his young friend’s forecast of the stages of his own future career: ‘And then?’
