Because of the experimental natural philosopher’s expert knowledge of the ways of the Creator, his praises will be more suitable to the divine nature, ‘than the blind applauses of the ignorant’… ‘This was the first service, that Adam perform’d to his Creator, when he obey’d him in mustring, and naming, and looking into the Nature of all the Creatures… The activities of the Royal Society were thus regarded as a rehearsal of prelapsarian religion.
