The baker is a solitary creature, often starting his day during the fragile hours before dawn and remaining in his workshop throughout the duration of his waking hours, but ‘whatever grows in solitude then goes back into the community’ as ‘bread is baked in order to feed people and strengthen them so that they may live’ (Hildegard of Bingen).
