Belo Cozad (1864–1950), a legendary Kiowa flute player, explains in this recording (before the section presented here) how the wooden flute song that he plays was obtained from an ancestor who learned it from a spirit. The Kiowa are reputed to be the bravest, most courageous and most warlike of the tribes of the North American Southwest.
