Taking refuge in the Three Jewels is central to Buddhist lay and monastic ordination ceremonies, as originated by Gautama Buddha, according to the scriptures, and it is generally considered to make one officially a Buddhist. The notion of Three Jewels, Treasures or Gems pervades Far Eastern culture in different guises beyond any strictly defined Buddhist sphere, and featuring in Jainism and in Taoism.
